L’Unité Expérimentale Arboricole du centre INRAE Nouvelle-Aquitaine Bordeaux, rattachée au département Biologie et Amélioration des Plantes, est composée de deux domaines expérimentaux pour une surface totale d’environ 120 ha : le domaine des Jarres à Toulenne, près de Langon, en Gironde ; le Domaine de la Tour de Rance à Bourran, dans le Lot-et-Garonne. Cette implantation géographique aux caractéristiques pédoclimatiques et environnementales complémentaires permet l’accueil adapté d’expérimentations aux exigences contrastées. A Toulenne, les sols sont des alluvions fertiles profonds non battants, le climat est océanique avec peu de risque de gelée, tandis qu’à Bourran les sols sont des boulbènes limono-argileux battants, un climat océanique dégradé et des amplitudes thermiques plus marquées.

L’unité conduit des expérimentations sur arbres fruitiers et forestiers, en collaboration avec des équipes de recherche INRAE du centre Nouvelle-Aquitaine Bordeaux du centre d’Avignon (PACA), ainsi qu’avec différents partenaires professionnels de la filière fruitière française.
Les expérimentations sont conduites selon trois axes principaux.

  • La caractérisation et l’évaluation de matériel végétal issu notamment de programmes de recherche sur l’adaptation des arbres fruitiers et forestiers au changement climatique.
  • La mise au point et l’évaluation de systèmes de culture innovants à bas niveau d’intrants et à hautes performances agronomique, économique et environnementale.
  • La gestion du Centre de Ressources Biologiques (CRB) Prunus (fruits à noyau) et Juglans (noyer), constitué de collections de matériel végétal à valeur patrimoniale et/ou scientifique. Il a pour principales missions de collecter, conserver, caractériser et diffuser le matériel.

L’unité est intégrée au Système de Management Environnemental collectif des entités expérimentales INRAE et a obtenu à titre collectif la certification ISO 14001 depuis 2017.

The Arboricultural Experimental Facility of the INRAE New Aquitaine Bordeaux center, attached to the Plant Biology and Breeding Department, is composed of two experimental domains for a total area of about 120 ha: the Domaine des Jarres in Toulenne, near Langon, in Gironde; the Domaine de la Tour de Rance in Bourran, in Lot-et-Garonne. This geographical location with its complementary soil-climate context and environmental characteristics allows for the appropriate hosting of experiments with contrasting requirements. In Toulenne, the soils are deep fertile alluvium, not sealing, the climate is oceanic with little risk of frost, while in Bourran the soils are sealing silty clay boulbenes, a degraded oceanic climate and more pronounced thermal amplitudes.

The facility conducts experiments on fruit and forest trees, in collaboration with INRAE research teams from the Centre Nouvelle-Aquitaine Bordeaux and the Centre d'Avignon (PACA), as well as with various professional partners in the French fruit sector.
The experiments are conducted along three main lines.

  • The characterization and evaluation of plant material resulting in particular from research programs on the adaptation of fruit and forest trees to climate change.
  • The development and evaluation of innovative low-input cropping systems with high agronomic, economic and environmental performance.
  • The management of the Biological Resource Centre (BRC) Prunus (stone fruits) and Juglans (walnut), consisting of collections of plant material of patrimonial and/or scientific value. Its main missions are to collect, conserve, characterize and disseminate the material.

The unit is integrated into the collective Environmental Management System of the INRAE experimental entities and has collectively obtained ISO 14001 certification since 2017.
